Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to contest particular calls made by the official, following the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
