On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
